Seniors defeat Castlehaven in Kelleher Shield
The Senior team took on Castlehaven on Friday night in Castlehaven as they stepped up their preparations for their upcoming Senior Championship game against Muskerry. Both sides were slightly under strength due to Cork commitments.
Clon played against the wind in the opening half and contained the Castlehaven attack well in the opening stages with the scores level at 0-03 each after the opening quarter.A poachers goal from Sean McEvoy following an error from the Haven keeper gave Clon a boost but the Haven responded with a goal of their own before half time to leave the scores tied 1-05 each.
Castlehaven opened the second half with three quick fire points to open up a lead. Clon responded again with a well taken goal by John Leahy which he crashed to the back of the net from 20 metres. This gave Clon the momentum and they led 2-08 to 1-08. The next 15 mins were evenly contested with both sides missing many scoring opportunities due to poor shooting. With five minutes remaining the scores were tied 1-11 to 2-08. Clon kicked the last 2 points and withheld a late Haven burst to emerge deserving winners 2-10 to 1-11. The win moves Clon up to 4th place in a tightly contested league.
