Junior A Hurlers overcome Dohenys to advance to Semi-Final

The Junior A Hurling team took on Dohenys in the West Cork quarter final in Enniskeane on Saturday evening. The game was played in bright sunshine with a strong breeze blowing straight down the field.

Clon were playing against the wind and sun in the first half and struggled to get into a scrappy game in which neither team hurled fluently. The opening quarter was tightly contested with both teams cancelling each other out. Dohenys only had three frees to show for their efforts while Clon had two Sean White points ( 1 free ) in reply. Poor discipline led to the concession of frees for Dohenys as they only scored one point from play despite playing with the elements in the entire first half. In the remainder of the opening half Sean McEvoy got two quickfire points and were added to by another Sean White free. The teams were level six points each at half time. Clon had to be the happier side as they had the aid of the strong breeze in the second period.

Clon scored the first point in the opening minute of the second half from another Sean White free. However they were to go another 14 minutes without any score as the scrappy nature of the game continued. The scores were still deadlocked entering the final quarter (0-07 each ). An excellent David Lowney run up the field resulted in a fortuitous Tiarnan O’Connell goal , who’s shot deceived the Dohenys keeper. Clon followed up the goal immediately with another well taken point from Tiarnan to build the lead to five points. 1-09 to 0-07. Another Sean McEvoy point extended the lead before a long range Mark White point from a free. Dohenys never gave up as Clon retreated in a bid not to concede a goal and in the next ten minuted Dohenys had three points to narrow the lead entering injury time. An well taken Tiarnan O’Connell point from the sideline put the game to bed as good defending kept a dogged Dohenys side at bay.

Clon now advance to play St Marys where a stern test is expected and a much improved performance is required in order to progress to the West Cork Final.
