Intermediate Football side defeated in Championship
The Intermediate Football team took on Gabriel Rangers in Round 3 of the County championship in Castlehaven. Clon were forced to field a weakened side due to holidays and a number of late deflections. Clon only had 3 substitutes which was disappointing.
Clon played with the aid of the strong breeze in the opening half but got off to a poor start as a much sharper Gabriels side played fast football. Clon conceded a soft goal to trail 1-03 to 0-01 after 10 mins. Clon responded in impressive fashion and rallied. They were aided by a well taken Olan O’Donovan goal and a number of Shane Collins frees and two points from the hard working Alan Murphy to trail 1-06 to 1-08 at half time.
Gabriels started the second half strong and quickly opened up a 1-10 to 1-06 lead. Again Clon dug on despite playing against an impressive forward unit. Gabriels led 1-15 to 1-09 entering the last 10 minutes.Even though Clon never looked liked getting the equalizing scores they were still well in the game. In the last 10 minutes Clon began to tire as Gabriels kicked a number of long range scores to win emphatically 1-20 to 1-10. The final scoreline was slightly harsh in the Clon side who put in a hard working effort but were undone by a side who will be in contention for County honours at the end of the year.
