St Stephens Day Run / Walk / Jog

Again this year, as he has done for the past 35 years, James O Donovan has kindly taken on the job of organising the St Stephens Day Charity Walk / Jog / Run. The entire funds raised will go to benefit local charities and this year we have been asked by the Clonakilty Branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association to help them in their fundraising.

James and I were completely blown away by what we saw when we visited their base in the Clogheen Industrial Park, The Miles last week to explore how any funds donated might be used. They are doing fantastic work supporting the personal needs of wheelchair users, collecting them and taking them to medical appointments, shopping etc. In addition they organise group activities at their centre 3 days a week.

Their transport currently consist of 3 Minibuses however as they are 01, 04 and 09 registration, they urgently need to upgrade at least some of their fleet and need to raise €40,000 to do so. We have agreed to make them the main benefactor of the funds raised on St Stephen’s Day,

We will also be providing part of the proceeds to The West Cork Underwater Search and Rescue who provide emergency services along the West Cork coastline. The Unit consists of trained and experienced divers, mariners and shore support volunteers based in the area.

As funds are badly needed and as both are commendable causes, we are making an appeal for a big turnout on the day. We are appealing to everybody who can, to make a special effort to attend and in particular all our players (male and female). The younger Underage players should be accompanied by an adult.

Best regards
