Match Report:
The main pitch in Ahamilla was a fitting venue for an exciting and entertaining game between Clonakilty and Castlehaven in the u12 West Cork Div 1 football league on Monday evening last. The wonderfully committed display of all that is good about Gaelic football from both sides would have provided a thrilling spectacle for TG4 had the cameras still been there. An early goal by Christo Delis looked to set the Clon boys up nicely but Castlehaven’s better use of the ball in front of the goal saw them take a well-deserved 4 point lead, particularly prominent at this stage for the visitors was James Maguire who also lines for Clon u12 hurlers. In response to a well taken goal by James Maguire, Clonakilty struck back for their own major with a great goal passed to the back of the net from Finn O’Mahony. Points in quick succession by Emmet Nolan, Christos Delis and Conor O’Gorman brought Clonakilty right back into the game as the forward line started to find their range which was a just reward for some hard work in the middle from Michael Francis Collins and Illan Smith.

At half time, Castlehaven led by 2-6 to 2-4 and on the restart they surged into a 5 point lead with clever direct use of the ball into their inside forward line and strong running from midfield. To the credit of the Clonakilty lads they continued to play good football and were rewarded when sub Mattie Lyons was on hand to finish two superb team moves to the back of the net. The second goal was a great finish after some good movement out the field and a killer final foot pass from Peadar Dineen left Mattie one on one. At this stage Clon were getting on top in half back line and midfield which in turn provided an ample supply of ball into the forwards. Ben Coffey thundered into the game from centre back supported by Fionn O’Donovan taking the challenge to the opposition with clever inter play out of defence. Their hard work was rewarded with great long range points from Michael Francis Collins and Emmet Nolan before Emmet burst through the Castlehaven defence to drive the ball to the back of the net. Timely interceptions from Fionn Gilmore and sub Eoghan Moynihan on for the injured Illan Smith continued to keep the opposition at bay.

Castlehaven to their credit came back strongly in the last quarter but the Clon defence performed superbly to snuff out the Castlehaven forwards with James Costello excellent from start to finish ably supported by the clever positional play of Eanna Deasy. With sub Tristan Walsh seamlessly slotting into the defence and Jack Byerley coming up with a crucial late save the Green and Red wall held firm. At the end the Clon team received a huge round of applause in appreciation of their great efforts from their parents and supporters. Clon Abu
