Match Report:
The final match of the 2020 football season was arguably the most enjoyable. A 13-strong team drove to the picturesque setting in Ballingeary. Ballingeary were well supported by friends and family. Clonakilty was captained by James Deegan. Clonakilty started very well. Forward play was dominated by James Deegan and Mattie Lyons. The defence was led by Christopher Harrington who was commanding in goal, pulling off numerous vital saves. Gradually Clonakilty built up a sizeable lead. They played with freedom and good decision-making. James Deegan in particular was outstanding. He intercepted numerous kick-outs and fed the ball to the oncoming Mattie Lyons or Harry Mulcahy.
Ballingeary had a few outstanding players but their impact was minimised by very tight marking by Lennart Lindenfeld and Tristan Walsh. Cathal O’Donovan and Harry Mulcahy, both left-footed, exploited the left side-line. Etaoin Mulcahy, Isa Khan and Micheál O’Sullivan were very effective in the full back line stopping a number of Ballingeary’s attacks. Callum McLellan, Tristan Walsh and Alex Ahern were full of running. In the second half, Peter O’Mahony switched to goal keeper and Christopher Harrington played as centre back and then midfield. James Deegan continued to field high balls and lay off to oncoming forwards with good effect. Because of the 5-goal rule, scores in the second half were more difficult to convert. Nonetheless a final tally of 17 scores, the majority from play was a significant achievement.

The referee presented the shield and rightly commended players from both teams. From the Clonakilty team he singled out Lennart Lindenfeld as a player to watch in the future! James Deegan’s speech was followed by jubilation as the boys capped off a great season in the Clonakilty jersey.
