Junior Hurlers Earn Fourth League Win

On Saturday April 18th, Clonakilty played their 4th Carbery Junior Division 1 Hurling League match against Kilbrittain in Ahamilla. The game was evenly balanced for the first 10 minutes with Mark White opening the scoring in the first minute with a great point from play. Kilbrittain responded well and got the next 2 scores, one from a free. However Jack O’Mahony restored parity in the 7th min after good work by Matt Murphy. Then David Lowney got in on the scoring act with a point following hard work by Brian White. Fergal Murphy followed up with another in the 11th minute. And then Niall Barrett set up Chris Kenneally for a beautiful point straight afterwards. Kilbrittain scored a point from a free before Fergal restored Clon’s 3 point lead in the 15th minute. Clon failed to score to score in the next 8 minutes and Kilbrittain started to get a foothold in the game. They hit 4 wides during this period. Then suddenly Brian White pounced on a defensive error to score a goal. 1.6 to 0.3 to Clon. Brian was then replaced by David O’Sullivan. Both sides traded points, Clon’s from a huge free by Fionn McCarthy. Cian O’Donovan and Eoin McCormack were playing very well in the full back line now and giving nothing to the Kilbrittain forwards. Both teams hit 1 more point each from frees, Clon’s by Fionn to leave the half time score at 1.8 to 0.5 in Clon’s favour.

Jack O’Mahony stormed into the game at the start of the 2nd half and was responsible for 2 fantastic passes to David Lowney who scored 2 points with aplomb. 1.10 to 0.5 now. However Kilbrittain scored the next 3 points, 2 from frees, to leave Clon up by 5 points after 40 minutes. At this juncture James Campbell and Sean Coffey came on as substitutes. Ciaran Crowley then set up Fergal for a welcome point in the 42nd minute. Fionn then scored from a pass by Niall to make it 1.12 to 0.8 after 48 minutes. Kilbrittain were then unlucky not to get a goal, denied by the brave young goalkeeper Eddie Morrissey who was having a fine game in goals. Oisin Hassett and Gary Finn were also in the fray now as substitutes. Kilbrittain got the next 3 scores all from frees to leave only 4 between the sides. Mike Noonan did some colossal work all game long but particularly in the last 10 minutes. Cillian came back on as a sub for Ciaran and scored another excellent point along with one from David Lowney. In injury time, Jack O’Mahony scored a free from way out. Final score was 1.15 to 0.11 to Clon. Well done to all involved. 4 wins from 4 by Clon. Joint top of the table with Kilmeen on 8 points.
