Four-Goal Clon Too Strong for Newcestown
On Monday March 9th, Clonakilty played their first Carbery Junior A. Hurling league match of 2026 against Newcestown in Ahamilla.
Clon got off to a very good start despite playing against the breeze and scored 1.1 courtesy of the speedy Fergal Murphy in the first 4 minutes before Newcestown replied with a point.
Cian O’Donovan restored the 4 point gap after 6 minutes. Newcestown then scored the next 2 points from a free and a 65 before Brian White got his first point from play in the 10th minute.
Mike Noonan and the returning Shane Deasy were doing well in the full back line and young Isa Khan and Oisin Hassett were working very effectively at this stage in the forward line. Two Brian White frees sandwiched a Newcestown point from play to leave the score at 1.5 to 4 after 16 minutes.
Newcestown then scored 2 frees before another Brian White free on 20 minutes. James Campbell then made a goal saving blockdown before Newcestown tagged on a point. Jack O’Mahony and Niall Barrett were working hard in midfield for Clon and Cillian White and Patrick Murnane were making huge contributions for Clon.
The half time score was 1.6 to 0.7 in favour of Clon.
Clon started brightly in the 2nd half and Niall Barrett burst through for a goal in the first minute. This was immediately followed by another goal by substitute Fionn McCarthy. Clon were in the driving seat now. Ciaran Crowley and Kieran Calnan were dominating their respective positions at this juncture. 2 frees by Newcestown and a free by Brian White had the score at 3.7 to 0.9 after 35 minutes. Then Jack O’Mahony took a free from his own half and it deceived the Newcestown keeper and ended up in the back of the net. Both Ciaran Coakley and Cal O’Mahony came on as subs.
The ever reliable Brian White and Niall Barrett both scored points from play before Shane Collins made a great save to keep Newcestown at bay. However he could do nothing about the goal that Newcestown scored from a rebound a few minutes later. The score after 50 minutes was 4.9 to 1.10 before Clon hit a purple patch for the next few minutes. Young Cillian White scored a great point from play along with a 65 and another point from play by Brian.
Fionn McCarthy got in on the scoring act again with another super point before a 65 by Brian. The 65 came about after great pressure on the Newcestown keeper by Cian O’Donovan. Fergal Murphy then popped up to finish the scoring with another point from play. The final score was 4.15 to 1.11. A great start to the year by Clon.
